How to kill a cold sore, fast.

When it comes to sexy blog topics, there are few that can hope to reach the glimmering heights of cold sores. There’s just something so… alluring about them, and the way they completely mess up your face and confidence for up to two weeks, wouldn’t you agree?

I think you might agree, because the cold sore post I did on this very blog five years ago is still one of the highest trafficked on the site, and after writing about them in Amazing Face, I am “proud” to say I have had many women email me over the years telling me how they now feel in charge of their cold sores, not the other way around. I wear the crown of Cold Sore Queen with pride! And a little bit of embarrassment. But mostly pride.

But it’s time to update. Reveal some new tricks and treatments so that we cold sore sufferers can win the battle faster and with less hands-covering-our-lips when we go into public. And hey, so many of us get them. Even CELEBRITIES, as the images below point out. (I did that gallery not be mean to those women, but to assure everyone just how indiscriminate they are.)

Obviously I am suffering from one currently, or I wouldn’t be writing about them. I’ve been smashed with flu and chest infection, which is probably why, because I always get them when my immune is shot, and also the reason this gorgeous blog has sat dormant for the past couple of weeks.

So, here’s how to stop your cold sore in its filthy little tracks. Here’s how to make sure it doesn’t even get to festering blistering stage and ensure it won’t scab. Basically, here’s how to manage and destroy a cold sore so that you can still get on with your life, and not feel like a social leper, and cut the whole process down by at least half the time if not more.

THINGS YOU WILL NEED AND SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE ON HAND:

* Famvir or similar (a 3x pill oral famciclovir cold sore treatment you buy from the chemist)
* Lysine (an essential amino acid that fights the virus internally. Take one daily if you’re prone to breakouts, and two 2x a day during a breakout.)
* Acetone nail polish remover and cotton pads/tips (buy the pre-made pads for travel)
* A sterilised pin/needle
* Compeed cold sore patches (keep a few in your wallet in case of sudden attacks and never travel without a full box)

 THINGS NOT TO DO:

* Drink coffee or caffeinated drinks
* Eat seeds, chocolate or tomatoes
* Stress – it makes the little bastard worse

WHEN YOU FEEL THE AREA GO HOT AND ITCH, MOVE FAST, BITCH

I do apologise for the name-calling, but I cannot stress how important speed is at this point. Actually, I can: A LOT. VERY MUCH. It can come down to minutes between a cold sore that lasts three days and one that lasts 10.

If you can get a Compeed patch onto the site at the tingle stage, you’re basically a hero. Take your Famvir, which will greatly lessen the time the cold sore hangs around, but only if you take it on the first day of the sore manifesting, and some Lysine now and you’re a godamn national hero.

compeed_coldsore_patch

If you haven’t acted quite fast enough and there are bumps popping up, wash your hands and then take some acetone nail polish remover on a cotton pad or some tissue and press it on the site for a good, painful 20 seconds. Do not let any get into your mouth obviously, because it’s toxic. And wash hands straight after. What it does is dries the skin out so that the virus doesn’t have that lovely moist, bubbling warm environment it needs to keep growing. It’s a very well-known and effective home remedy, up there with using rubbing alcohol, hand sanitiser, or peroxide. The NPR will buy you time to get to the nearest chemist and buy some patches (and Famvir if you haven’t already got some on hand, which you should, because you are a cold sore sufferer, and like boy scouts, our motto is Be Prepared.) Obviously if you have a Compeed patch nearby, and you will if you know what’s good for you, then jam it on now. I often cut mine with nail scissors to shape, because the Compeed circle is definitely not a one-shape fits all, and especially if your cold sore is only half the size of a patch, and you have this obvious crinkled plastic sticker on your face or lips.

famvir-famciclovircold-sore-relief-lypsine-blackmores_4ef11c6777f09

And now for something completely different: My Chinese herbalist tells me when she feels the tingle she uses pins to break the skin and “bleed the cold sore out”. I don’t really know what this means, but she says you need to do it before there are any blisters present and then the cold sore never appears because you have released the virus in the blood. Hmmm.

WHEN YOU SEE BLISTERS APPEAR, SORT THEM OUT

My advice is to pop them. Controversial, but if you let the blisters keep growing and multiplying, well, I reckon you’re a dingus. I recommend doing it very carefully and hygienically by first washing your hands, then taking a sterilised needle or pin, break open each blister/bubble, then very quickly blot the area with a small square of tissue to stop the serum weeping and spreading. Blot once only then use new tissue and toss all of the blotters straight in the loo. Next, once the area is dry, ‘sanitise’ the area by applying nail polish remover on a cotton pad. Hold for up to 30 seconds. Of course, now place a patch on straight away to get to work on healing and to reduce the heat, pain and discomfort. Wash hands.

Acetone

DO NOT REMOVE THE PATCH UNLESS YOU ARE CHANGING TO A NEW ONE.

Cold sores do not need to breathe. They need to suffocate and die at the hands of nail polish remover and under the nurturing plastic shield of a hydrocolloid patch. Try to keep liquids (drink through a straw etc) away from the patch which will mess it up. At night or in the morning before work, wear your old one in the shower – because you should not let the sore get wet! – and then remove once you’re out. Before applying a new patch, hold some more nail polish remover on a cotton pad on the sore for 30 seconds to teach it who’s boss. Then, brush your teeth and place a new patch on before you go to sleep and dream sweet dreams of a cold sore-free life.

STAY VIGILANT

By doing all of the above, I usually only suffer for 3-4 days now. (Bad breakouts in my teens and twenties used to run well over two weeks, so this is a fucking miracle, in all honesty.) But! Just because you think it looks healed, doesn’t mean it is. And we all know how easily cold sores can rise again if not completely killed. So, keep on with the NPR/Compeed Patches for as long as it takes. If you’re lucky, the scab won’t even arrive, and you will gain a free pass straight to the dry, flaking skin stage. If you do get a scab however, well, the good news is that it’s healing. Keep up with the patches, and learn the art of Cold Sore Concealing Makeup, which, at the risk of enormous public humiliation, I will demonstrate in my next post, complete with step-by-step photos and the products that work.

My latest hope in the ongoing fight against cold sores comes in the shape of the Virulite Cold Sore Machine, which I am trying to buy online but keep hitting cool roadblocks. These little electronic zappers are kind of the new wave in cold sore treatment and I for one, have unrealistically high expectations.

Do you have any amazing tips or tricks that you use to annihilate your cold sores? Share them, for God’s sake!

Great thank you for this Zoe!
I have already got the patches for my bf as he gets them and I’m trying to not get them…I will keep the link to your post handy for future ref!! xx

Zoe, as a fellow cold sore sufferer, the best purchase I ever made was the Boots Avert Cold Sore machine. http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Pharmaceuticals-Avert-Electronic-Cold-Sore-Machine_1129542/ My life is 20% better because I can whip out this baby to nuke the virus whenever it rears its ugly tingle. The inventors of this machine deserve a Nobel Prize!

Compeed and Lysine = THE ACTUAL BEST.

  • kirsty

got your book zoe and this page marked.. tried the patchs but found them trickey to apply and a bit obvious..a definate art to it..also came off easily if eating/drinking or get them a little wet…..got onto the famvir through a nurse friend and WOW it works if you pop one early [the tingleing/swelling part]…i know people who rave about lysine to stave them off….i also love zinc/vit C to aid healing….and most important lots of spf lip balm to prevent the buggers if sun/wind set them off….great post..

You are the reason I have cat-like reflexes when it comes to dealing with cold sores! I will never forget the look of horror on my mother’s face when she walked into the bathroom to find me about to douse that bastard in nail polish remover! I’m now the go-to person for my family and friends when it comes to killing them and all credit goes to you!

P.S. I may have just LOL’d like a hipster teenie bopper at how closely I read this article just to make sure I hadn’t missed one single thing! Sign of a brilliant writer right there!

oh the shame of cold sores! im at the tail end (hopefully) of a breakout, one of those really cute cold sores that look like a line of angry red blsisters drooling from my mouth. I especially liked when it regrouped and got bigger and unable to be covered. Looking forward to bookmarking your next article!

It’s so nice to know I’m not alone!
I was the lovely recipient of a breakout right on the corner of my mouth, that as it healed kept splitting, thus giving me the appearance of The Joker from Batman.

I can’t thank you enough for writing this Zoe! I’ve just suffered from my first delightful breakout of these little bastards, and spent two weeks hiding from the world. I’m looking forward to teaching them who’s boss next time!

Coldsores have been ‘ruining’ my life for many years! Now at 30 I feel like I’ve mostly got them under control by using many of the strategies you have suggested. I’ve always broken the skin so I could feel the horrid burn of the metho I then tearfully pressed onto it! But I’ve never used nail polish remover, I will try that next time…next time being hopefully never!!! 🙂
Thanks for sharing, only fellow suffers would understand the feeling of turning up to high school with a coldsore – not cool!

Thankyou! I had my first dire outbreak when I fell pregnant (my immune system clearly responded well!) and have been having a crash course in learning how to manage them. Especially now that I’ve had the baby and can actually take Lysine again!

  • Karen

    Hi Zoe,

I use this great liquid that my friend found in Australia last year called Dynamiclear and I swear by it!! It’s fast, effective and dries the coldsore out. After each Dynamiclear application is dry I place the compeed patch over the top!! You have to try it!!

  • Poppy

I hate coldsores, hate them. I had an outbreak once that went for 4 weeks even with the government approved medicine from the doctors – 2 repeats. A naturopath told me to avoid foods that are arginine (sp?) rich, like nuts, chocolate, eggs and red wine. At the time I was in a new relationship and this was basically my diet (late nights, red wine, eggs for brekky and ferero rochers). I use lysine but a much higher dose when I have one (like 4 a day) and it needs to have zinc/vit c with it to help absorb. Also if you don’t have nail polish remover extremely hot water (boiling) on a flannel held on it for as long as you can stand helps dry it out. Haven’t tried Compeed but I definately will now. Thanks Zoe.

    • Poppy

Also if you can do all this at the sign of the first tingle (esp the lysine at a high dose) it may not even come up at all. I have had them disappear overnight or only last 1-2 days.

  • Liz

when you get the tingling sensation, hold an ice cube on the spot on and off ( don’t hold it on so long that it’s aching, numb etc.- so as not to get a frost-bitten appearance) for about an hour. has worked for me

  • Jodie

Ice, put a cube of ice to your lip and hold it there until the cube melts. If you do this when you feel the burning if a cold sore coming up it will kill it. If you are out, go through the drive through at maccas, buy a small coke, tip it out and use the ice cubes on your lip. Works every time. No need for any creams or patches etc.

  • Lili

Hello! A question to everyone as this is my first time getting CS and I’m unsure of what the next step is. Day 1 I got the tingling sensation and applied aciclovir repeatedly in thin layer, took vitamin c+ echinacea. On Day 2 small blisters appeared, I dealt with them in the same way and they retreated back. This morning of Day 3, I have a thin tough looking layer of skin (is that the scab?) I would say it’s a slightly dark red. Does that mean my CS is healing?

Should I continue to apply Aciclovir or will that not help? Should I try your NR trick at this stage? Should I know moisturise my lips with Carmex so that this (I assume) scab doesn’t break or bleed?

I’m desperate for some advice relevant to this stage of the CS!
    Forever grateful – L.

  • kh

I used to suffer from CS HIDEOUSLY. Missed o-week, missed ski trips, parties etc with the horror. Then i went to the doctor and explained my misery and she gave me a prescription for Valtrex (valacyclovir) which is the same family as mentioned in your story, but MUCH stronger. I have never looked back. I pop a few at the first sign of a tingle, and perhaps once a year one actually breaks through, but by popping them daily for a few days, I haven’t had a CS last more than a couple of days (and even then, pretty mild) in a decade. Mostly they just never arrive (I used to get six or so outbreaks a year). CHANGED MY LIFE Y’ALL. If your doctor is very kind they will put it on the PBS for you. If not, it’s very expensive but worth every single cent to me. Also, it’s available over the counter for far less money in Asia and lots of European countries, so I stock up massively when I get away. (yes, it looks like I am running a Valtrex emergency store in our bathroom.

  • Inness

This is the best article! Of course, I live in the USA, so I don’t have easy access to some of the products mentioned..but I am definitely shelling out for Compeed patches. Thanks for this – I feel more empowered and much less alone!

  • Myra Smith

There are various opinions about whether you should break a cold sore. As you said in your post if you do it with cautious, you can prevent the oozing from infecting other parts of your body. I guess it takes a lot of guts to do it because it can be extremely painful.

In my blog posts, I have shared similar ideas on how to make cold sores go away faster. I agree with you that Lysine and Compeed may help in speeding up healing. I have mentioned3 out 5 remedies in my post. If you are interested, go ahead and read it at http://www.headachewar.com/how-to-get-rid-of-cold-sores-fast/.

  • Celeste

    Hi Zoe,
I hope you don’t mind me asking but can you take the famvir now that you are pregnant? I just found out that I am as well and I haven’t been able to ask my dr yet.
    Thanks and congrats!

  • jules walker

clear nail varnish works better than compeed patches,it seals the sore, adheres to the skin much better,it peels away easily or can be cleaned off using npr and a cotton bud,I use it for tingle/itch also when blister has formed, works very well to prevent and blisters disappear without crusting very quickly

  • michaela

I LOVE this article. Thank you so much. I’m 32 and I’ve suffered from these annoying things since I was about 11. I’d love to just add that when I started practicing yoga regularly, they basically disappeared. That’s the most important feedback I can give. Even if it’s 2 classes a week, I didn’t see one for years. They still find their way sometimes when my immune system is down and stress is up though. And when it happens I have another great tip – eating the right foods and avoiding the wrong is huge. Besides just avoiding seeds, coffee, wine, etc. eat foods high in l-lysine and low in arginine. Google a list of these there are tons. Also, take coconut oil either in smoothies or supplements or just on toast (though wheat isn’t highly recommended but there are other “breads”.) Preventatively, coconut oil is also great. My mouth was getting dry from the cold weather changes and I should’ve used it right then. Coconut oil is antibacterial and moisturizing! Again though, I know if I’d been practicing yoga more, I probably wouldn’t have gotten one at all or at least nipped it. When I was doing yoga I ate whatever I wanted and still none! I let the holiday rush distract me, excuses are useless though. Anyway, hope this helps! And THANK YOU for your article again – I didn’t know about the clear cover things. I think they’re newer to the US. I got them for the first time today and texted my sister I’d discovered a miracle. Here’s more on coconut oil. http://coconutoil.com/coconut-oil-offers-hope-for-antibiotic-resistant-germs/

    Hi Zoe,

I love this article! I’ve been suffering for the last 4 days with the most horrendous outbreak of my life. My method of ‘attack’ was 2 acyclovir tablets 4 times daily (I normally used Valtrex 2g 12 hours apart, but opted for to try something else this time), then orajel single dose cold sore treatment (available in USA over the counter at most good chemists and supermarkets). I think the orajel single dose treatment is similar to the home remedy solution of using nail polish remove. It dries the cold sore out particularly well and I would recommend this to anyone (though it comes in at a little pricey- $US 17 for 2 small doses, but that’s all you should need). I’m no on the road the healing, albeit still hiding away until I’m full restored. Do you have any tips on how to speed up the healing time once that horrible looking new white flesh has formed where the scab used to be?

    Thanks!!

  • Stephanie

Ok so I’m trying to figure out what Lysine I’m supposed to purchase because there are about a million results. Is there something specific that I should look for when buying Lysine? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also I’m in the US so some stuff you have available I don’t :/

  • Kyle

Something worth mentioning is to increase your Lysine in take (milk, white meat, supplements) and decrease your Arginine intake (chocolate, nuts, seeds).

Doing so won’t just help you lower cold sore outbreaks but will actually help you during one.

  • Daveena

Hi! I was just wondering if you’ve looked into the other brands of electronic cold sore zappers? I’ve seen a few on eBay (could be dodge I know.. That’s why I’m asking you!) that look ok… But who knows!? Do you? I’ve just got a cracker of a cold sore and I’m currently doing all of the above to help it cease and desist ASAP! They are just the worst. Sad face.

Zoe, this made me laugh out loud. ‘Share them, for God’s sake!’ Haha. Only those who get cold sores can truly understand the horror of them, how time slows as you’re made aware of every excruciating second of the miserable life you’re living with one pulsating on your face!

My worst, worst nightmare was always that I’d get one leading up to my wedding, and guess what! I did! Of course I did! Cos if cold sores know anything, they know when an important event is coming up and how they can bring down fun times.

So I attacked that mofo with all the pharmaceutical artillery. I used Lysine, Zovirax, and those god-awful patches, which do nothing to hide the monstrosity but are good at night, and my GP prescribed tablets also. I’m happy to say that on the morning of my wedding – after not touching it once, except to apply mountains of Zovirax (not caring if my nose looked like a permanently snow-capped Mt Fuji) – it shed its final crusty scab and I was free. Lord, I was free.

I’ve heard about the nail polish remover but thought it an old wives’ tale. I’m going to follow these tips from here on in.

Thanks a million for being so brave to confront this and provide tips. Look forward to the video. Damn, you deserve an OAM for that kind of bravery.

THIS IS GENIUS.  I got one of these yesterday morning for the first time in 6 years and was completely unprepared, but willing to try anything new, because Abreva is a joke.  I carefully broke the blisters with a tiny, sterile pin, then did the Nail Remover…  OMG!  It stung but I could feel it killing the little bastard.  I was also so grateful b/c at that point, my lip was fat and swollen and SO sore that the pressure from it had its own heartbeat; breaking them and then drying out with the Nail Remover brought so much relief.  It’s now healing.

We don’t have Compeed in the US, but I did just grab some non-medicated, clear CS covers (Abreva brand).  They don’t do much except keep it covered and allow you to apply makeup over it and over a smooth surface.

I also always use ice, and that does help with pain relief.

Currently applying 20 seconds of Nail Remover about 5x/day.  Ordered Compeed online from the UK.

Thank you thank you!  This makes them much more manageable.

    Hello,
The milk is a good idea.  A item that works for drying out and halting the growth instead of toxic nail polish remover is 100% tea tree oil, has the same effect.  Tastes bad but not as dangerous.  I use a swab and press into the sore for 20 seconds. I repeat it as needed (usually only on the first day depends on how fast I catch it).

Okay so when I woke up Saturday morning with a cold sore orgy on my top lip that could be identified with the Google space station satellite camera – I was f*ing beside myself – being 28 weeks preggo and not allowed to take Famvir. I consulted dr Google and found this blog. Where have you BEEN all my life, acetone? Twice daily doses of the Ol’ nail polish remover on my lip with some compeed over the top and the orgy is dying a quick death. Drying it out must be key! Amazing amazing amazing. Thanks so much for writing this rad blog post. You’ve changed my life

I tried popping with sterile needle and while it released the pressure last night this morning my lip is huge and the sore is so red and grew double over night! So I am going with the DO NOT POP IT advice listed everywhere else.. 🙁
Did however try the nail polish and it worked in making it stop the tingle. I guess I will just have to see out this one’s due course 🙁

  • Peter

I’ve suffered from cold sores for 50 years. I have a “secret” natural ingredient that I’ve used for several years and have had a full blown cold sore in ages. I apply it at the first tingle and it’s gone within hours not days. I’ve been trying to get it mass produced and on the market but despite sending out hundreds of emails to pharmaceutical company, associations etc. no body responds. Any offers from fellow sufferers would be greatly appreciated

  • Wakeupwithabigone

Any tips for people who wake up with one already thriving? I’ve just got one of the biggest of my life and I just covered it in nail polish remover and tea tree oil! I’m just gonna stay inside for a week 🙁

  • riddledwithherps

I am so jealous of all you people that talk about ‘the tingle’. My cold sores don’t give me ANY sort of pre warning. I’ll literally just wake up in the morning with an elephant man puss filled face. I used to only use aciclovir creams and take aciclovir tablets but found that that didn’t really do much at all, so recently I’ve been trying the home remedies. One that seemed to work was crushing sea salt up and holding it against the sore – same idea as the NVR, just to dry it out. It definitely scabbed a lot faster than normal. This time (im on outbreak three in 6 weeks) i’m trying the NVR approach. Fingers crossed!! D:

    • Ms.G

May I suggest that you take the Lysine supplement on a daily basis? I use to be like you at times where I wake up with one or happen to look in the mirror and THERE IT WAS staring me in the face (sneaky lil f’ers). I take one 1,000 mg pill of lysine every morning and now I only get cold sores twice a yr which I combat with a additional dose of lysine and apply Tea tree/Melacuela essential oil! Good luck!

  • Tea tree oil #1

    Hello,

Thank you so much for your advice! I’m so glad I have found a community of cold sore suffers just like me…I’ve felt so alone and stigmatized when it comes to cold sores. I advocate for all your suggestions especially the Lysin which is the very first thing that actually worked for me! Can I add a suggestion of Tea tree essential oil aka Melacuela essential oil. I use the doterra brand Melacuela and I apply it as soon as I feel the tingle! It f’en works!!! It’s my savior and I carry it EVERYWHERE! It’s more important to me than my credit card let me tell you lol

  • CS Success!!

I’m a big believer of using everything you got.  Throw all the stuff at the problem and you will succeed. Here is my ways for CS success.

    1.) virulite
    2.) valtrix or famvir ,
    3.) Acentone nail polish remover.
4.)Iburphone and frozen grapes- help swelling
5.) Lysine pill (1000 or more throughout the day)
    6) pop it if you want- more acentone nail polish remover
7.)Repeat.  (tea tree oil if you want)
prevention- lysine daily.  Virulite zap daily or before big events or if your out in the sun.

I have had CS since I was a kid.  I would get massive over blown ones that would last for weeks. I actually lived in fear of them.  However, the last few years I have learned many tricks that REALLY help. Lots of them are seen above but I will share them all anyway.

I bought a Virulite after I got one about two years ago.   (Virulite on Amazon. They are about 100 bucks.) I would say they are VERY worth the money.  They work very well.

As all cures it helps a great deal if you can catch it early. I used my virulite as a precaution sometimes too. I hadn’t got one for almost a year and a bit. I had a new sense of freedom from them. I got sloppy and didn’t carry my usually items with me on a hot holiday recently.  Darn! I felt it one morning before going watersliding with my family. I zapped it with my virulite.  I really should have said no to hot day in the sun with water!? I kinda forgot how damaging this could be.  It really took over.
In this situation I had not brought my valtrix and hadn’t been taking my lysine… AHH! what was I thinking. I did have my acentone nail polish remover  however, thank goodness.  But I wasn’t able to catch it in time and it turned into a nasty one. ahh well, I will never have that happen to me again.

SO here is how you can possibly prevent one from coming up or stopping it in its track and have it last about 2 -3 days with little notice! I know… :):)

I hadn’t had one for a few months and then last night I felt the slight tingle and looked in the mirror and saw a tiny little bump. Very small, no one but me could ever see it.

So I got into action.  I used my virulite on it right a way.  Even though you want to zap it constantly -they say it is only effective to zap it two- three times a day. After that the “light” isn’t effective. – This device works on red light. A spectrum of light that gets the cells to start repairing. It works. I have used my virulite now on scrapes, burns and pimples. It feels immediately  better and heals the sore quickly.

Like I said above- I believe in giving everything you got to help make it go away.   SO after I used my virulite I lucky had my valtrix pills with me. I took 4 before I went to bed.

I woke up at about 6:30 and zapped it again with my virulite. I also put acentone nail polish remover on it and sat with it for a while. (10 mins)  It does sting but I rather have a little pain then a full blown CS.

At about 10:00 I took the other 4 valtrex pills and zapped my lip again. I then sat with acentone on it for a while. (I hold it on for up to 15 mins.) If it’s too painful just stop and start again.  I also took two advil (iburpohen Sp??) to stop the swelling. I used frozen grapes (because they don’t drip as much as ice cubes) and I put it on my lip (Not on the effected area). This helps with swelling. Swelling is usually just the second day symptom but sometimes can be the most noticeable.

The big key things is- Keep it dry! I don’t care if your hair is gross.. Don’t wash your hair. Keep it dry. Use straws. And haha don’t go watersliding if you can!!!

This what valtrix does- It dries out the little sucker.( I saw people above used famvir and I googled the difference and saw they both do the same thing. My doctor just put me on valtrex. So there ya go! )Always keep a at LEAST 8 of those pills on you incase.   The best thing to do is take a bunch (Like 4) right away. You need to fill your system with it. You can talk to your doctor about it though. They are a little pricey but man I don’t care! I will spend the cash to have my freedom back!

I continue to put acetone on it and zap it. I don’t have any lysine but I just bought some on amazon and should get it tomorrow. I’m going to start talking it everyday again as a prevention. Just have to get into the habit.

Its about 12:00 am now and I just popped the tiny tiny little bump -which is gone down a huge amount since early. Barley can see it now. YAY! I know there is mix feelings about popping it. I washed my hands and cleaned the needle really well. Then I just slightly popped the bump and dabbed up any liquid inside. I have noticed it helps. I then immediately put acentone nail polish remover on it.

At the moment the lip is a little swollen but not horribly. The bump is still there but quite small. It feels slightly warm but not painful anymore.

The last thing I do is focus my thoughts on the pain and tingling sensation. I believe our bodies heal ourselves and pain is just our minds way to focus all the healing cells in that direction. So instead of ignoring the pain or tingling I try to focus on it.  Mediation helps to.
Try to keep yourself hydrated and clean eating as well. I also use tea tree oil too. It helps and is natural.

I repeat a mantra of “Thank you for my healing”  This way I  feel that I am not resisting my body but letting it “off the hook”. It is okay.  Your body is curing itself as fast it can and you just helped it a great deal with all the stuff you did above.

Relax, it sucks but its going to be okay. You will get through it. You will see.
Try to do these steps and soon  you will be CS free (I call them CS’s because I believe calling them the full name (like he who shall not be named) gives them more power.  You have the steps. We can do this! We are not alone. Our bodies are beautiful!
    again..

    1.) virulite
    2.) valtrix or famvir ,
    3.) Acentone nail polish remover.
4.)Iburphone and frozen grapes or clean freezer pack- help swelling
5.) Lysine pill (1000 or more throughout the day)
    6) pop it if you want- more acentone nail polish remover
7.)Repeat.  (tea tree oil if you want)
prevention- lysine daily.  Virulite zap daily or before big events.

If you don’t have a viruite. Buy one. But don’t worry! You can just use the other things now. If you don’t have the pills then go to the doctors! but if you can’t then don’t worry again! Go the drugstore and get lysine and acentone nail pollish remover. Keep the acentone on constantly then.) I have cured mine in 3-4 days with JUST acentone nail pollish remover.

If you aren’t going out then don’t cover it with make up- if you are -cover that sucker!

    Cs Success!!

  • Cs Success!! Part 2

I thought I would do a brief follow up! It is 5:00 now and my CS is almost gone.  Yes! Take a moment to let that sink in! 1 day!

I was lucky because I got it right away. Which is really important. It might be a good idea to start a little kit of all these ingredients and put it in your purse just for an emergency. I know that sounds a bit dramatic but if you are on this site then you understand how horrible it can be.
I have continued to use the acentone on it but not as much. The swelling is almost completely gone. The area just looks slightly red. The bump is almost completely gone!

I will continue putting the virulite on it and continue to put the acetone on it for the next couple days. I will also give the rest of my lips a zap (virulite)  a couple times.

Again, healed in 1 day without hardly any notice. It feels good to have control.

    Happy success!

I’m a cold sore sufferer who lives in the states. After experiencing some tough breakouts my doctor prescribed me Valtrex (the generic version), 500 mg daily. I haven’t had any outbreaks since April 2015 (knock on wood). I believe the 500mg/day is called suppressive therapy. I initially tried episodic therapy, taking 2,000 mg of valtrex at the first onset of symptoms, followed by another 2,000 12 hours later, but this method is only effective if you notice the symptoms of a cold sore before has formed. Ideally you want to pop 2,000 mg when zero physical signs (pre-tiny red bump stage) and there’s only tingling. I was able to catch a cold sore once during this stage (my lip was just starting to swell. I didn’t even feel any tingling, I just happen to notice a slight change in my lip because I was tweezing my brows in an airplane bathroom with that hideous light that hides NOTHING). The episodic therapy worked, the valtrex stopped the cold sore and it didn’t get beyond the slightly swelling stage. That said, if you don’t catch the cold sore early enough, episodic treatment does very little, it’s hard to abort the mission with a boatload of valtrex once the cold sore is well on it’s way. I don’t know if I’m just insensitive, or if I’m one of those people who isn’t blessed with the tingling warning sign, but my lack of ability to detect the early warning signs is what lead me to try suppressive therapy. So far, so good, the pill doesn’t have any side effects at the 500mg dose. I sometimes step up the dosage to 1,000/day when I’m in cold sore prone conditions (skiing, beach, going to the dentist). Just thought I’d share with everyone. I’m not a share my thoughts on the internet type, but I feel like I should share this info with other sufferers.

    • Eb

I forgot to mention one thing in my original post. When I decided to start taking 500mg valtrex/day I asked my doctor how likely am I to get another cold sore while taking this amount of valtrex. He said this method isn’t bulletproof and it will likely happen again, but the rate should fall to once every two years when taking valtrex daily.

Lastly, there’s a new drug on the market called sitavig. it’s a buccal tablet that contains the same active ingredient as Valtrex, but rather than swallowing a pill you put the tablet on the inside of your gum for 12 hours. It’s supposed to be more effective than valtrex because the drug is dispensed faster and more concentrated at the site of the sore. An assistant at my doctor’s office used it and thought it was more effective than taking 2000mg of Valtrex at the onset of symptoms. Like valtrex, this drug is only effective if the forming cold sore is caught early on. This drug isn’t generic yet in the Us, so it’s pricey, but thought it’s worth a mention.

I wish I had a cold sore on my lip!  Oh no, I have the extreme delight of having one on my nose…the second in as many months. I’m resembling someone who is balancing a bran flake….the worst of it is that I have a cold so have the need to blow my nose quite frequently and yep….remove the well applied disguising makeup and have to start all over again.  I’m off to the shops to buy everything going and if I feel brave enough tonight with stab the Mother fucker and see what happens then….apart from screaming I hope it works, because I works in sales I’d like to people to remember me and NOT my coldsore.  Thanks so much for the advice x

Hi Zoe – Can I just say fewf to the fact that I’m not the only freak that drowns cold sores in nail polish remover! I am currently going through my worst ever cold sore break out since I was in high school (I’m 24 now, and am leaving the country in 3 days to travel for 3 months, lord help me!) I didn’t even right, tablets, nail polish remover, tablets etc.m but sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. This time I fecking lost!!! My whole bottom lip is covered. I’m so disgusting. Anywho the reason for my post is that I’ve found another solution thanks to my little brother. I never thought I would learn anything relevant or new from him haha! But instead of nail polish remover I used Apple Cider Vineger. Same steps, same process and yes it still stings! But I found it a little more refreshing than poison. Today is day 4 of my out break and I’m not looking too bad. I mean I’m still avoiding the public, but considering past outbreaks it would be ALOT worse! Thanks for the read!!! 🙂

  • Cassandra

Exactly a week to my engagement party an angry a whopper of a colder sore!!!
Question: can I use the Zovirax patches in my cupboard instead of the Compeed patches?
I’ve just done your technique anyway with the Zovirax.

  • Spring Fever – bee chic style

[…] come to the conclusion that it doesn’t speed up the healing process. I read this awesome blog post on cold sores and from now on nail polish remover will be my best friend every time I get one.. […]

So I just got the worse cold ever and the fact that I was blowing my nose, licking my lips, and the 15 degree weather outside in Colorado, did no help my already dried out lips. They were cracking, peeling, and bleeding. I tried everything! eos, softlips, carmex, blistex, Vaseline, rosebud salve, etc. nothing worked as well as the Somaluxe Lip Rescue – within an hour my lips looked and felt better, and within a few seconds of putting on instant relief.

  • Kaylia

The worst week yet! I’m on my second break out right now! My first haven’t even heeled all the way yet. The first sucker happened to appear on my top lip in be middle. I did everything I was suppose to do, and it still broke up throughout the day. I couldn’t afford to skip a day of work so I suffered with the look to work that whole day. SAY EMBARASSMENT! Anyways the weekend went by, I managed to cover it. But here’s the worst part! My on day 4 with my first sore and someone this morning a new one just so happened to want to pop up on my bottom right lip! Never in my life with all these sores have I had two in a row.. Back to back! SAY FML. I’m just want to cry right now. The second one I iced it, hot water it and even put lysine cold sore cream on it! It stung but it’s not really bringing down the sore. I manage to get my hands on l-lysine 1000 Mg. took the first pill earlier but idk how it’ll react to my body! I don’t even feel stress.. Now I’m doing whatever I can to get rid of this second sucker off my lip. Worst of all times!

  • Trisha

The fingernail polish remover works AWESOME for me.  That is all I use.

  • Kristan banks

Instead of nailpolish remover, I use methylated spirits. U fortunately I can’t bring myself to pop the blisters. I have received the worst two cold sores ever while on my honeymoon thanks to sunburn.

  • Haley

Cranberries! I heard somewhere that they help and they do but only to prevent!

  • missralral

Thanks everyone for the ongoing tips!! Currently suffering my first cold sore in about 5 years six days out from my wedding and I’m suffering serious panic about it!

  • Justin

Kinda gross but has always worked for me at the first sign of the tingle use a q tip and smother the area with your own ear wax again it sounds gross but it does wonders hope this helps

Many of our members were born into privilege due to their wealth, gender, color, or family lineage. Though their journeys are shorter and smoothly paved, they carry generations of experience and knowledge that are valuable to society.

But our most esteemed members are those who began as the poorest, the most downtrodden, the most oppressed — for their journeys were the hardest, and the challenges they faced made them worthy of greatness.

So I’m staring into the mirror with acetone pressed on my cold sore, internally screaming in pain… “Zoe this better work” …. This is what cold sores are all about… Ultimate hope and faith in those that share the horror with you.. Maybe it will work, I don’t know yet.. But it’s just good to know I can find a three year old post … And still hold faith it may just help.

    • Julie

I am totally impressed by this – I woke up on Friday morning (28th) with a cold sore well into the blister stage. I used sterile tuberculin syringes to pop them, drained them with a q-tip, applied the acetone and then tea tree oil. I then covered it with liquid bandage (new Skin) and then a polysporin sticker thingy. It is now evening on the 30th and it is completely gone! It never even had a chance! NOTHING has ever worked this well – EVER! Thank you for this awesome idea.

    hello everybody……….
i was diagnosed of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) 2014 ,so There are two medications that can only help me slow down the progression of IPF which was pirfenidone and nintedanib,so i chose
Pirfenidone helps to slow the development of scarring in the lungs by reducing the activity of the immune system. It’s normally taken as capsules three times a day..i spent a lot of money taking this medication ,so one day Mrs linda posted a testimony saying Dr mapipa cured her of COPD,so copied the email address and website which are ;drmapipaherbalmedicinehome(at)gmail(dot)com, www(dot)drmapipaherbal(dot)weebly(dot)com.then i contact dr mapipa asking him if he can cure me of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF),he replied and said yes ,so i thought he was joking ,i just decided to try out his herbal medicine with faith ,then i purchased the herbal medicine ,which was not that expensive ,then Dr mapipa sent the herbal medicine to me through courier service ,after 2 days i received the herbal medicine ,then i called him ,he told me how to use the herbal medicine ,he said i will be cured within 4 weeks of usage ,so after 4 weeks of usage ,then i went for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) test ,the doctor confirmed that my lungs is 100% repaired ..thanks to Dr mapipa once again.GOD I WILL BLESS YOU ABUNDANTLY ………

I can’t believe I’ve just discovered this post. It’s a complete break through and I wish I found this years ago. Been suffering from CS since I was 8 now 24 I went through a period of being very run down with tonsillitis and I got them so many times at the same point of my lip it’s scared. I knew about compeed but mine spread and blister within 12 hours. I can already feel the drying affect and it’s worth the pain! Thank you SO much for your post I was freaking out as I have a job interview next week xxx

Ok so I’ve come to the conclusion that cold sores are what they are. I’ve tried everything. From pills to creams to home remedies. Alcohol vanilla extract peroxide lysine a Abreva. Nothing fn works. In fact used al of that and then another one formed on my bottom lip. Nothing works they are what they are they just have to be there deal with them and let them run there course. It really sux but nothing works for me at all.

  • Hayley

    Thanks for your post!

I recently had my first coldsore on my lower lip, which after 10 days, has almost completely disappeared. However, 8 days in, my whole mouth started tingling and itching, and tiny, tiny dots (not blisters that I could pop) started appearing across my top lip. I’ve since taken valtrex, applied zovirax and compede, and the itching has gone away. However, the tiny blisters are still present 3 days later. You can’t even see them unless you hold the skin tight and look very closely, and they’re too small and abundant, and under the skin across my upper lip to pop them. Does anyone have any recommendations for what to do next? I imagine I’m still contagious until everything has been drawn out. Or is it possible for these to dissappear?

    Thanks

  • Melanie

I recently discovered Emu Oil for cold sores. I’ve been all over the Internet with searching for success stories over the years and seen 2 separate posts (one male, one female) that claimed their sores lasted only a DAY using Emu Oil products. It’s makes sense and it doesn’t. Viruses like moist, so how would the oil work? Well it is supposed to be an anti-inflammatory. Inflammation is just pain, redness, swelling, itching…etc…which is exactly what a fever blister is. I have used it on about 4 fever blisters and I will say it has made a difference but never been a one day process for me. I am thinking of also getting tea tree oil for its anti-viral properties to apply topically as well as the Emu Oil. I may even try grapefruit seed oil for its anti-bacterial properties (just in case bacteria tries to slow down healing time). The other 2 posters thought that the Emu Oil was why they didn’t get the scab too. Because it moisturized the skin while killing it. For someone who suffers them at least twice a year.. it’s always worth trying things that sound like miracles for others when it comes to these beasts!

  • Nicole

    Hi Zoe!
I could say a million wonderful things about your book and how my skin is on the improve (yay!) after a not so good 6 months BUT you already know that. The real reason I am messaging you is because I am a cold sore sufferer, albeit not your normal sufferer.

When I get a cold sore I get them underneath my eye. Yup. It’s painful and the swelling makes me resemble a cyclops. We’re talking 7+ days off work because my eye is red and can barely open. Not such a great look for a teacher. Also very contagious to my little minions, I mean; students.

After buying your book I decided next time I felt the telltale signs I would try your tricks although the thought scared me. What if I tried it and my eye ended up worse than usual? But I figured I had nothing to lose with a hens night coming up where I’m the bridesmaid. On Saturday morning I woke up feeling as though I’d been punched in the eye – that telltale sign, considering I hadn’t been in any bar fights recently, or ever. I immediately went to the pharmacy and got those magic little pills you suggested, some lysine, nail polish remover and Compeed pads. I woke up the next day and there was slight swelling but only noticeable to me. The day after I woke up and nothing…. just some redness where the coldsore should have been. I’m on day four now, usually the worst day, and I am so incredibly thankful to you! I’m still wearing the patch because I don’t trust the little blighter in case it rears its ugly little head. I have been able to live my life as normal, no one has noticed and it’s been virtually pain free (…yeah, the nail polish remover burns but when you know you’re killing that little bastard it’s kind of a satisfying pain!)

So thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I feel as though I am forever in your debt and as though I’ve gotten my life back. I apologise for the essay, but ya know – teacher and such it’s in by blood 😉

    Nicole 🙂

OMG…. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU…..this has been a game changer for me… hideous chin coldsores for years… hideous. I went straight out for the patch thingys but first tried NPR and even that was a next level improvement… I sooo dont need to cut my patches as suggested my little horrors almost need 2… anyway thanks for the frank no bullshit advice

  • Dee

great comments on here… I too suffer from these horrible little shits on a monthly basis but this week was the first time I got an entire bunch above my lips and on my nose. Compeed patches are awesome but in this instance the patches arent hiding the sores. Luckily I can work at home which is where I have been holed up since yesterday but I know I will have to go back in this week 🙁 I would highly recommend bio-propolis cream and the patches. i have just blitzed my face with nail varnish remover which at least has removed some of the gunky yellow crap and has made it bleed which means at least it will heal slightly quicker. I am so glad that I am not alone. I have heard that orajel is awesome but it is not sold in the UK unfortunately 🙁

    • Tony

I used to get them 4-5x a year until a freind told me about a treatment she found on line called Salubrex.  She swears by this stuff.  I started putting it on when i felt the tingling coming on and It cleared up in two days and it hasent returned in over a year.  I would tell anyone who is interested in clearing up your CS to try this stuff.

  • Alina Blanke

Uh so I’ve been suffering from CS about once every year, always during spring to summer seasons. It’s usually below my nostrils but this time it’s in the middle of my top lip and it’s so annoying. It burns when I laugh or do wide movements with my mouth. I’ve never tried popping it or anything, ive always just let it sit there. But this time it’s really annoying me so I’m considering using the needle thing to pop it out. Any advices? I’ve sorta been peeling some off…

  • Nic

I got sick last week.  The sickest I’ve felt in years.  Now, it would appear that the cold sore on my upper lip is directly proportional to how sick I was, because OMFG this thing is so huge I should charge it rent for the space it’s taking up on my face.  I don’t get them often, but when I do there are no symptoms at all.  None. Nada. Nuthink.

The shittiest part this time is that my other half took me away to Melbs for this long weekend and now I’m forced to inflict it on the unsuspecting public.  That wasn’t so bad when I looked like the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge gone wrong; but I just look like a leper now.

In fact, we were on standby flights at the airport yesterday.  We waited 7 hours for a flight and it was only when I approached the staff that we actually got a boarding pass.  I’m pretty sure the guy got us on a flight because he was terrified of the angry conjoined twin attached to my face.

I apologise for my rant.  Going to hide head in hotel room for now and google somewhere that can deliver a surgical mask to my room

Recently I learned from my ND that Korean Kimchee has 900 different probiotics in it when he prescribed eating it to help boost my immune system. Two days ago when a cold sore threatened with the usual tingling, itch and blister I decided to make a poultice from Kimchee to see what would happen. That night with a 1″ square piece of Kimchee along with a little extra of the “sauce” on a sterile piece of cotton, I taped it over my cold sore and went to bed. Yesterday, the very next morning, my cold sore was gone! Remaining was a tiny little spot where the blister originally started – it had broken leaving a raw spot about 1/8″ round. It is dry now so today it will probably scab. Nevertheless the itch was gone and there was no pain within 8 hours of applying the poultice. Hope this wasn’t a freak one off but next time this happens will be the test to see if it is repeatable. If you are willing to try please let me know if it worked for you too. HD p.s. the only challenge is smelling Kimchee for 8 hours!

  • Q.S

Once the cold sore has been popped and is in the drying out stage, hydrocortisone cream works miracles.  It takes away the dried out and red appearance and allows the sore to heal quicker.  It also stops the pain of the blister. The cream is super affordable and can be purchased over the counter at any pharmacy.  There are varieties with aloe, which work even better than just the regular

The best remedy I ever found was in the book (or e-book) How to Stop Cold Sore Outbreaks and HSV-1 While Getting Youthful Skin by Samantha Rollins. It’s found it on Amazon for a limited time. I suffered with cold sores for thirty years several at a time but since using the info in the book I haven’t had one outbreak! And it is painless and costs under $10 for the remedy. It has some of the same things you have read about but the difference is in the way she explains how to take the remedy, what not to do and how to never have a break out again. This really worked for me!

Hi all! I haven’t read through all the comments so apologies if i’m repeating what someone else has said.

The best thing I have come across if you are able to do so, is get an ice-cube on there, the earlier you can do this the better. It is so unbelievably effective, I have had cold sores hardly come up at all and if you get it really, really early you can prevent it altogether. Obviously it’s difficult to carry an emergency ice cube around with you, but if you’re at home I just cannot recommend it enough. Hold the ice on there as long as you can be bothered. It also takes the swelling down if you’re cold sore is in mid flow. Hope this helps!

    “I Woke Up Like This”😢
So this dude  at my office seems to have a CS every other week. I cringe when I seehim bcuz he shares a desk with me and uses my phone. My Wall Streetstock in Lysol and every sanitizing product in the market has risen. Been vigilant . Scrubbing every surface like its a magic mirror. Alas, all for naught!  Got one of those bad boyz this morning. Doing the NPR and squeezing Vitamin E capsules. I am not playing! This is war!

For anyone who’s pregnant and can’t use the standard medications listed extensively above – find a Compounding Pharmacist and ask them to whip you up some Lemon Balm Oil – it’s a brownish liquid that is perfectly safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Just roll it on at the first sign off trouble, reapply often, and it’ll be barely noticeable and gone in a few days!! The one time (recently) that I didn’t have any on hand I ended up with a massively embarrassing huge lump on my lip that the stupid Compeed patch wasn’t helping.
FYI – not all Compounding Pharmacists have heard of it – – so to be clear – it’s NOT Lemon Oil, it’s LEMON BALM OIL. If they don’t know – try somewhere else. For anyone in Sydney – Blooms the Chemist in Paddington usually have it in-stock. Good luck!

    Hello everyone

,I thought just include my real life experience. I was actually on my holiday abroad 3 weeks. And woke up with bump/blister starting to form on my lip on my 2nd day. So I had remembered alot of people raving over the acetone method. So I figured I would try it. I just used basic cotton pad and dipped it in little bit acetone. Placed it on lip. I did 2mins then re-applied every 10 mins. I was genuinely stunned by the results. acetone works the best. I know, I have been on holiday before and got coldsore and it ruined my holiday. I used all the creams, wet teabags, icecubes you name it the last time and yes it helped. But I swear do not ignore the acetone its absolutely works. My blister literally reduced into nothing. And the best part is that my lip area stayed same colour as my lip during the process. Saved my holiday I am not joking seriously take my advice and always take small bottle acetone on vacation or to work etc. stay healthy everyone!

Herpecin L HL 30 on my lips every day and night has prevented outbreaks for the last 2 years, but this year i got a doozy under my nose while fighting a cold. The whole area between my lip and nose was covered with sores and some inside my nose too. Oy.
I already take lysine every day and used to take acyclovir. But i wanted something natural
I researched all the natural remedies and decided to buy a virulite and lemon balm salve and anti viral roll on. After a few days the sores were better but still oozing and bleeding.
a good friend told me to try raw apple cider vinegar. I have to say that i am more impressed with the raw apple cider vinegar which i have been applying for a few days diluted with some water. it stings but it dries up the sores faster than anything else i have tried. The sores look much better and are healing finally.
i did have some new blisters forming on my buttocks and the virulite worked on them thankfully.
I’m going to keep the virulite but i’m also going to try using the raw apple cider vinegar once a week for cold sore prevention. It has to be RAW apple cider vinegar though, if its pasteurized it won’t work.

Once you are at the stage when lip is healing do you keep going with apple cider and compeed patch? Or at what point do you stop this as once scabbing should you be putting moisture?

  • Katie M

Hey Zoe did you ever try the virulite device? I arranged for a friend who lives in LA to get me one but I haven’t yet tried it as I don’t have a cold sore (good news!) fingers crossed it’s a game changer for us cold sore sufferers 🙏🏼

  • lisa291

i couldnt do the acetone right away because i was at work. I did it 8 hours later. the patches really do work at keeping them small. but i could see the cold sore popping up around the edges of the patch (like its trying to escape on to other areas of the lip????) anyway i have put a patch on that too. the original one has not gotten big but because it did technically become a cold sore before i did acetone there is a layer of skin on it – i guess this is my scab. should i keep putting patch on at this point?

REAL CURE ON HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS AND HIV
some times we just need to give a try to herbal Medicine to see for our self. I am very happy today that i do not listen to what people say if not i would have been a dead man by now. I was infected with HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS in 2014, i went to many hospitals for cure but there was no solution, so I was thinking how can I get a solution out so that my body can be okay. One day I was in the office thinking where I can go to get solution. so a lady walked to me telling me why am I so sad and i open up all to her telling her my problem, she told me that she can help me out, she introduce me to a doctor who uses herbal medication to cure HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS, HIV, HPV and many more disease and she gave me his email, so i mail him. He told me all the things I need to do and send me the herbal medicine through courier delivering service and also give me instructions to take, which I followed properly. Before I knew what is happening after 3 weeks the HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS that was in my body got vanished and blister dried off . I went to the hospital for a test and it was negative. this man is real and he is the solution to herpes virus. so if you are also heart broken and also need a help, you can also email him herbalcure12 gmail.com. I have been a sufferer for many years but have managed to get my healing time down to 4 days. At the first tingle I apply Freedom (spot gel) to help minimise redness/swelling and if it blisters I apply baking powder to dry it out. Next time (sadly there will be a next time!) I will try nail polish remover too!

Okay. Your turn.
